Claves are a simple but distinctive percussion instrument made up of a pair of sturdy wooden sticks. When struck together, they produce a clear, bright sound that helps maintain the rhythm of the music. They are particularly typical of Latin American music, but are also used in school music activities and various musical genres. The player holds one stick loosely in the palm of their hand and strikes it rhythmically with the other, creating a piercing, melodic sound.
